The 5.11 Chameleon Soft Shell Jacket is packed full of surprises!
The Chameleon is soft, cozy, comfortable, and above all enjoyable to wear. This jacket is perfect for days ranging from sunny, and cool, to bitter, and windy. The Chameleon features an interior micro fleece collar, shoulders, and sleeves. The micro fleece is a great feature to have around the neck, and shoulders, but I am not so fond of it inside the sleeves. That is just a personal preference of mine on any jacket. It should be noted that the micro fleece has a bad habit of catching any fuzz, or debris flying around. So keeping a lint brush handy is a plus. The Chameleon also features an interior mesh lining which helps to alleviate moisture, and promote breathability. There is nothing worse than throwing on jacket which quickly turns into a personal sauna!
The exterior of the Chameleon is made of a soft shell polyester. The exterior is tough enough to battle against a rainstorm, and cleaning off dirt, and grime is a cinch. The exterior is also where you will find the main feature of this jacket - the hide away identification panels! All three panels are Velcro detachable, and replaceable. This is important, not only for those who want to switch out panels for different jobs, or assignments, but also for those who want to use the panel stowaway pockets as utility pockets.
Speaking of pockets, there are two designated exterior pockets on each side of the jacket torso, and a third designated exterior pocket on the left sleeve. The pocket on the left sleeve is very handy for small items, but the zipper, and the pocket itself probably wouldn't hold up to extreme abuse. There are also a few open organizer pockets inside the left interior of the jacket. Although convenient, I wish at least one of these pockets included a zipper.
A couple of other features of the Chameleon include an adjustable hem cord which I found to be clumsy, and Velcro adjustable cuffs which I found to be useful. One other caveat, I found that the jacket sizes run just a bit small.
The Chameleon is the perfect Fall, and early Winter Jacket, and it is truly packed full of surprises! Overall I give the 5.11 Chameleon Soft Shell Jacket five stars out of five!
